Nathan Burton
A book jacket designer popped into the studio on friday to give a presentation on his work and talk to us about book design. He was obviously aware that we are about to begin a project on a series of book jacket designs. His thought process interested me the most, becoming almost machine like in his output of work and handling of his work load. He mentioned that he would often design 60-70 book jackets a year each with different deadlines. Nathan has been in the business for 12 years and when looking at his designs and output its obvious that certain processes come naturally now. I asked him whether the research side of his work is considered a lot as it seems like he’d receive the job and understand the story and go ahead and design it. The process is cut short because of experience, it’s not like he doesn’t research but he tends to know the desired style.
Also got the opportunity to sit down in a small group with Nathan, where I got an understanding of his early career. He gave us a useful insight into the industry and explained his transition from working in a design company and then going freelance. He gave us some good book cover blogs to look at which would be handy to get a feel for the design.
A useful talk and should be seeing him in the studio later on in the project…
