So back into the swing of things, brain slightly starved of creativity over the summer.
It began with an introduction to our new unit Visual Communication in Context 2. Should be a good one, with the opportunity to design stationary and numerous day projects sounds like a brief full of possibilities.
‘Truths’ - The title of our first day project.
It Involved working in groups, Me, James Stone, Charlotte Harding and Niall Simmons. We had to produce three posters that were graphically and contextually linked. One poster had to focus on a common knowledge, one that concentrates on an extraordinary fact and another with a statement that was a complete lie.
So as a group we brainstormed a few ideas, running past ideas of the topic of drugs, sport, popular issues and current affairs. We settled for a topic of the News of the World, In particular the ‘Phone Hacking Scandal’ an issue that has made its way into the media frequently over the past 6 months.
As a group we worked well in a calm environment, looking through web articles to find the particular information we need. Our common knowledge point came from a horrific topic surrounding Millie Dowler’s death/disappearance. The extraordinary fact came from an interesting point found on a site relating to the coverage of the News of the World as a paper. The complete lie, turned out to be more of a twisting of the truth, we found out that Hugh Grant was involved and rumours that he may have actually triggered the investigation into phone hacking at the NOTW, but this is not true however he was involved as a victim.
The finished product was something we were happy about as a group. We had troubles on this particular day with internet sources on campus, but we benefitted from this going out and capturing photos of our own of news boards and not sitting in front of a computer manipulating a photo from the internet. This allowed us to get exactly what we wanted and create a particular feel. The headlines were generated as a group and written by myself. Overall I feel it worked well not only as a poster but as a presentation. The photography makes it feel more realistic and representative of the view a member of the public may have, and not just another flat graphic.
Happy with it as a whole, Thanks to the group.
